  • Description

The United States put a stop to a resolution at the United Nations on Monday (26 January) backing Palestinian rights and calling for Israeli withdrawal from all occupied Arab territory.

Explaining his veto, United States ambassador Patrick Moynihan said he did not kill the resolution because "of antipathy to the aspirations of the Palestinians" but because he thought any "imposed" solution would not work.

Mr. Moynihan committed the United States to redoubling its peace making efforts in the Middle East and the United States State Department later said America would be active in the coming months in working towards a settlement for the region. The department added "our efforts will be seen to speak for themselves."
It has already been announced that President Ford is considering a trip to the Middle East visiting Israel, Egypt, Syria, jordan and Saudi Arabia.

Mr. Moynihan who has taken a tough stand on many issues at the United Nations recently, has this week been defending his tactics and accusing his country's State Department of not supporting his efforts to break up an anti-American voting block at the United Nations.

The film includes part of Mr. Moynihan's speech explaining his veto of the resolution affirming Palestinian rights. A transcript of his remarks appears below.
