  • Description

AS TROOPS OF NIGERIA'S FEDERAL ARMY THRUST DEEP INTO THE SECESSIONIST TERRITORY OF BIAFRA (FORMERLY EASTERN NIGERIA) RECRUITS HAVE BEEN FLOCKING TO APAPA BARRACKS IN THE FEDERAL CAPITAL, LAGOS, TO JOIN THE ARMY.

THEY CAME MAINLY IN RESPONSE TO GOVERNMENT ADVERTISEMENTS URGING THE NEED FOR COMBATANT SOLDIER RECRUITS TO COME FORWARD. APPEALS FOR RECRUITS WERE ALSO ISSUED OVER THE RADIO.

THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT'S MILITARY MACHINE IN THE REAR AREAS IS FULLY GEARED TO PROCESSING THE NEW RECRUITS AND TURNING THEM INTO MILITARY MEN IN THE SHORTEST POSSIBLE TIME. BUT FROM BIAFRA THERE CAME A THREAT THAT THEIR SERVICES MAY BE REQUIRED FOR SOME CONSIDERABLE TIME.

LIEUTENANT-COLONEL ODUMEGWU OJUKWU, LEADER OF THE BREAKAWAY STATE, TOLD WAR CORRESPONDENTS AT THE WEEKEND THAT BIAFRA WILL FIGHT FOR TEN YEARS IF NECESSARY TO RESIST NIGERIAN FORCES.

THE 33-YEAR-OLD LEADER SAID: "THE NIGERIAN HEAD IS GETTING LARGER AND THE TAIL IS SHRINKING. THE FURTHER THEY GET ON TO OUR TERRITORY THE MORE DIFFICULT IT GETS FOR THEM."
ASKED ABOUT THE CHANCES OF RECONCILIATION WITH LAGOS HE SAID: "AS A MILITARY MAN I ONLY THINK OF PUSHING THE WAR TO A SUCCESSFUL END. I DO NOT KNOW A FORMULA UNDER WHICH WE COULD FIND A SETTLEMENT."
MEANTIME THE FEDERAL TROOPS WERE DRAWING GRADUALLY NEARER THE BIAFRAN CAPITAL, ENUGU. THE KEY UNIVERSITY CITY OF NSUKKA, 41 MILES (65 KILOMETRES) NORTH OF ENUGU, WAS CAPTURED BY FEDERAL TROOPS AT THE WEEKEND.

OTHER FEDERAL TROOPS ARE REPORTED TO BE BATTLING BIAFRAN TROOPS AT ABAKALIKI, 40 MILES (64 KILOMETRES) SOUTH EAST OF ENUGU. IF THE ADVANCE GOES ON THEN FEDERAL TROOPS WILL EVENTUALLY GRIP ENUGU IN A RINGER MOVEMENT.

IN NSUKKA THE FEDERAL FORCES WERE REPORTED TO BE MEETING SOME RESISTANCE FROM POCKETS OF SNIPERS, INCLUDING CIVILIANS, LEFT BEHIND BY THE RETREATING BIAFRAN ARMY. FEDERAL MILITARY FORCES SAID THEY EXPECTED THE SECESSIONISTS AFTER WITHDRAWING TO ABOUT 12 MILES (18 KILOMETRES) NORTH OF ENUGU, TO MAKE A STAND THERE.
