  • Description

MAR 29 - AND ONLY SCATTERED DEBRIS REMAINED ON THE BEACH AT PEN MARCH, ON THE BRITTANY COAST WHERE, ON THE NIGHT OF MAR 26-27, FIVE OF THE 7-MAN CREW WERE DROWNED WHEN THEIR FISHING BOAT, "TANTE MARIA", WENT AGROUND ON THE ROCKS.

THE "TANTE MARIA" HAD LEFT NEARBY CONCARNEAU LATE MAR 26 FOR FISHING WATERS SOUTH OF IRELAND. A THICK MIST REDUCED VISIBILITY TO 100 YARDS AND SHORE LIGHTS WERE ALMOST OBSCURED. WHEN THE TRAWLER WENT AGROUND IT IMMEDIATELY SENT AN SOS MESSAGE BUT THE POSITION GIVEN WAS VAGUE AND HELP DID NOT COME.

AT THE NEARBY VILLAGE OF PRIMELIN, THE ONLY TWO SURVIVORS, 50-YEAR-OLD LOUIS TALBOT AND HIS SON, 18-YEAR-OLD YVES, WERE RECOVERING SLOWLY. THEY HAD ABANDONED THE BOAT BEFORE IT WAS DASHED TO PIECES ON THE ROCKS.
