INTRODUCTION: The International Energy has welcomed United States President Jimmy Carter's plan for energy conservation. Delegates from the 18 member countries have been meeting in Paris, France to discuss the United States plans and to define its own energy policies.

SYNOPSIS: Discussions were held at the headquarters of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, OECD, which established the Agency in 1974. They were chaired by the IEA President, Detlev-Carsten Rhowedder. He said later that delegates believed crucial Mr Carter's statement that the rate of immense in primary energy consumption could be halved. The philosophy coincides with that of the IEA which includes in its aims international co-operation in order to reduce dependence on oil imports.

The IEA also aims at developing new sources of energy, and thus welcomed President Carter's plan to increase coal production. the Agency wants to set an oil consumption target for all its members, and encourage the use of domestic resources. The OECD has warned that a continuation of present energy policies in major industrialised countries could lead to serious oil supply shortages by 1985.
