  • Description

A MILITARY COURT IN THE GAZA STRIP TODAY (SUNDAY) CONVICTED THREE WOMEN, ALL STUDENTS, FOR MEMBERSHIP IN THE PALESTINE LIBERATION ORGANIZATION (PLO) AN ARAB GUERILLA ORGANISATION. THE TRIAL OF THE THREE WOMEN AND THE SENTENCES WHICH RANGED FROM TWO TO THREE YEARS, HAS CAUSED CONSIDERABLE AGITATION AMONG GIRL STUDENTS SUPPORTING THE THREE ACCUSED.

ONE OF THE GIRLS, NAHLAH HAFEZ EL-BIAD, 19, A STUDENT OF THE GAZA TEACHER'S SEMINAR, WAS SENTENCED TO 3 YEARS FOR BELONGING TO A SUBVERSIVE ORGANISATION AND FOR REMITTING FUNDS FROM JORDAN TO MEMBERS OF THE GUERILLAS IN THE GAZA STRIP. THE OTHER TWO, FATMA ZA'ALA MURTADJA, 17, AND FATMA MOHAMMED AFAMAT, 24, WERE SENTENCED TO TWO YEARS EACH ON CHARGES WHICH INCLUDED HARBOURING THE COMMANDER OF THE GUERILLA GROUP IN THE GAZA STRIP.

THE TRIAL OF THE THREE WOMEN PROVOKED RIOTING AMONG ARAB SCHOOLGIRLS IN SUPPORT OF THEIR FRIENDS. THE RIOTS TOOK ON SUCH PROPORTIONS THAT AN ISRAELI SPOKESMAN DESCRIBED THEM AS THE MOST SERIOUS FOR A LONG TIME IN THE FORMER EGYPTIAN TOWN OCCUPIED BY ISRAELI FORCES DURING THE MIDDLE EAST WAR IN JUNE 1967.

AT ONE POINT THERE WERE 3000 RIOTING SCHOOLGIRLS IN THE STREETS. THEY BARRICADED ROADS, STONED CARS AND PASSERS-BY AND IGNORED ORDERS FROM TROOPS CALLED IN TO DISPERSE THEM. BY THE END OF THE DAY ABOUT 90 OF THE GIRLS HAD BEEN HURT AND 40 OF THEM ADMITTED TO HOSPITAL, THREE OF THEM WITH FRACTURES; THE REST WERE SENT HOME AFTER FIRST AID TREATMENT.

ISRAELI OFFICIALS SAID THAT GUERILLA GROUPS AND ARAB NATIONALIST ELEMENTS HAVE BEEN INCREASINGLY USING WOMEN AND GIRLS IN VIOLENT DEMONSTRATIONS, PROBABLY IN THE ASSUMPTION THAT THE AUTHORITIES WOULD DEAL GENTLY WITH FEMININE PEACE-BREAKERS.
