A TWO-DAY MEETING BETWEEN GHANA AND EIGHT DONOR NATIONS TO DISCUSS THE COUNTRY'S AID PROGRAMME HAS ENDED IN ACCRA WITH CAUTIOUS OPTIMISM ABOUT GHANA'S ECONOMIC POSITION AND PLANS FOR A FURTHER MEETING EARLY NEXT YEAR. THIS WEEK'S MEETING OPENED ON MONDAY (SEPTEMBER 11) IN THE STATE HOUSE.

A COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE END OF THE MEETING AGREED THAT THE RECENT DEVALUATION OF THE GHANAIAN CEDI BY 30 PER CENT WAS AN IMPORTANT MOVE TO STIMULATE DOMESTIC PRODUCTION AND BRING ABOUT A BALANCE OF PAYMENTS EQUILIBRIUM.

THE MEETING, WhICH FOLLOWED UP ONE IN PARIS LAST APRIL, WAS CHAIRED BY THE INTERNATIONAL MONETARY FUND AND ATTENDED BY BRITAIN, CANADA, DENMARK, FRANCE, WEST GERMANY, ITALY, JAPAN AND THE UNITED STATES. THEY'RE THE DONOR COUNTRIES.

OTHER ORGANISATIONS HAD ONLOOKERS, INCLUDING THE ORGANISATION FOR ECONOMIC COOPERATION AND DEVELOPMENT (OECD), THE UNITED NATIONS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME (UNDP) AND THE INTERNATIONAL BANK FOR RECONSTRUCTION DEVELOPMENT (IBRD).
