  • Description

A CELEBRATION WAS HELD RECENTLY IN KANESHIE, ACCRA, TO MARK THE COMPLETION OF THE FIRST PHASE OF THE BUILDING PROGRAMME FOR THE GHANAIAN-GERMAN TRAINING CENTRE. THE CENTRE, SUPPORTED BY THE WEST GERMAN FEDERAL GOVERNMENT, PLAYS AN IMPORTANT PART IN TRAINING TECHNICIANS AND MECHANICS TO RUN PUBLIC MOTOR TRANSPORT IN GHANA.

THE BUILDING WORK WILL COST SOME 104,000 STERLING (250,000 DOLLARS) EXCLUDING EXTERNAL WORK. THE CELEBRATION WAS ORGANISED IN GERMAN STYLE, WITH THE TRADITIONAL CEREMONY OF RAISING THE "RICHTKRANZ" (BUILDING WREATH).

AMONG THE GUESTS WERE THE DEPUTY CHAIRMAN OF THE NATIONAL LIBERATION COUNCIL, MR. J.W.K. HARLLEY, OTHER GHANAIAN GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS AND THE WEST GERMAN AMBASSADOR, MR. MUELLER.

MR. HARLLEY SAID GHANA COULD NOT REALISTICALLY PLAN TO IMPROVE HER TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM WITHOUT A LARGE BODY OF TRAINED MECHANICS TO KEEP THE BUSES AND OTHER VEHICLES IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. HE EXPRESSED GHANA'S APPRECIATION FOR THE VALUABLE CONTRIBUTION THE WEST GERMAN GOVERNMENT WAS MAKING TOWARDS THE COUNTRY'S MANPOWER DEVELOPMENT.

MR. MUELLER SAID THE PROJECT SYMBOLISED THE SPIRIT IN WHICH THE GERMAN PEOPLE WANTED TO HELP PEOPLE IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES TO IMPROVE THEIR CONDITIONS. HE SAID THE PROJECT WOULD EVENTUALLY BE HANDED OVER TO GHANAIANS.

MR. HARLLEY AND HIS PARTY LATER VISITED THE WORKSHOPS OF THE OMNIBUS SERVICES AUTHORITY WHERE THEY SAW BUSES BEING REPAIRED. AT PRESENT SIXTEEN STUDENTS ARE DOING A THREE-YEAR MECHANICAL APPRENTICESHIP COURSE AT THE CENTRE. THE NUMBER IS EXPECTED TO BE INCREASED TO 35 WHEN THE CENTRE'S OWN BUILDINGS ARE COMPLETED.

THERE ARE SIX WEST GERMAN INSTRUCTORS AT THE CENTRE AND SEVERAL GHANAIANS ARE NOW IN GERMANY TRAINING TO TAKE OVER SENIOR POSITIONS.
