  • Description

President Nicolae Ceaucescu of Rumania left Peking for North Korea on Saturday (20 May), after a five-day tour of China, during which he received huge welcomes in Peking itself, Canton and Hangchow. His reception reflected his high standing in Chinese eyes, because of Rumania's independent line from Moscow, and neutrality in the ideological feud between the Soviet Union and China.

SYNOPSIS: Before leaving the Chinese capital, President Ceaucescu signed a long-term agreement for economic and technical co-operation between the two countries. He also issued an invitation to visit Rumania to Chinese Party Chairman Hua Kuo-feng. Chairman Hua was at the airport fro the President's departure, and diplomats have speculated that the Chinese leader might visit Rumania, Yugoslavia and France later this year.

During his stay in Peking, President Ceaucescu told newsmen that he favoured a political settlement of the Sino-Soviet feud. Of the border talks between China and the Soviet Union, currently being held in the chinese capital, he said he hoped they would help lead to the normalisation of relations between the two countries.

The welcome the Rumanian president received in China has been matched in the past year only by the receptions for Yugoslavia's President Tito and Cambodian leader Pol Pot. His departure was equally lavish.
