    HOHNE, A 27-YEAR-OLD EAST BERLIN TOOLMAKER WON EAST GERMANY'S FIRST EVER GOLD MEDAL AT THE OLYMPIC GAMES. HIS TIME OF 4 HOURS 20 MINS 13.6 SECS. WAS TEN MINUTES FASTER THAN THAT OF THE SILVER MEDAL;S WINNER ANTAL KISS OF HUNGARY. LARRY YOUNG, OF THE UNITED STATES, CAME THIRD, WINNING HIS COUNTRY'S FIRST MEDAL EVER IN AN OLYMPIC WALKING COMPETITION.

    UNTIL HALFWAY, THERE WAS NEVER MORE THAN A MINUTE SEPARATING THE MEN IN THE LEAD. PAUL NIHILL OF BRITAIN, THE TOKYO OLYMPICS SILVER MEDAL WINNER, WAS IN FRONT AFTER THE FIRST 25 KILOMETERS, HOHNE WAS JUST BEHIND HIM. SOON AFTERWARDS THE EAST GERMAN TOOK THE LEAD AND KEPT IT TILL THE END. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THAT EAST GERMANY TAKES PART IN THE OLYMPIC GAMES AS A SEPARATE ENTITY.

    WILLIE DAVENPORT, A 25-YEAR-OLD AMERICAN, WON THE GOLD MEDAL IN THE 110 METRES HURDLES. HIS TIME, OF 13.3 SECONDS, EQUALLED THE OLYMPIC RECORD. DAVENPORT WAS NEVER CHALLENGED FROM HALFWAY THROUGH THE RACE. THE JUDGES CALLED FOR A PHOTOGRAPH BEFORE DECIDING THAT ANOTHER AMERICAN, ERV HALL, HAD WON THE SILVER MEDAL, AND THE EUROPEAN CHAMPION EDDY OTTOZ OF ITALY, THE BRONZE.
