  • Description

Egyptian President Anwar Sadat warned the American administration on Saturday night (18 October) of the dangers involved in supplying Israel with "certain categories" of sophisticated weapons.

The President was referring to American press reports that the United States may supply Israel with F-16 fighters - the most modern in the American arsenal - and Pershing missiles which are usually deployed with nuclear missiles and which would be capable of striking at Arab capitals.

President Sadat was speaking at a new session of the People's Assembly (parliament) in Cairo. The speech came exactly a week before he is due to visit the United States. The President has already hinted in a recent interview that if Washington went ahead with the deal Egypt may turn to the Soviet Union to redress the arms balance.

The President also touched on the factional fighting in the Lebanon which he called a catastrophe which could have worse consequences than the creation of Israel in 1948. He said the crisis in Lebanon was giving Israel an opportunity to launch plots and step up its propaganda against the Arab world.
