  • Description

BRITAIN'S ROYAL FAMILY LANDED IN SYDNEY IN TWO AIRCRAFT MONDAY (MARCH 30) AT THE START OF A FIVE-WEEK TOUR OF AUSTRALIA.

THOUSANDS OF CHEERING, FLAG-WAVING AUSTRALIANS TURNED OUT IN WET, WINTRY WEATHER TO GREET QUEEN ELIZABETH AND PRINCE PHILIP AND 20 MINUTES LATER PRINCE CHARLES AND PRINCESS ANNE FROM THEIR 18-DAYS NEW ZEALAND TOUR.

THEY LATER VISITED THE ROYAL EASTER SHOW AT THE SYDNEY SHOWGROUND.

A 21-GUN SALUTE SOUNDED AS THE QUEEN AND PRINCE PHILIP STEPPED FROM THEIR AIRCRAFT, WHERE THEY WERE GREETED BY GOVERNOR GENERAL SIR PAUL HASLUCK, PRIME MINISTER JOHN GORTON, NEW SOUTH WALES GOVERNOR SIR RODEN CUTLER AND STATE PREMIER ROBIN ASKIN.

THE SECOND ROYAL AIRCRAFT CARRYING PRINCE CHARLES AND PRINCESS ANNE TOUCHED DOWN ON THE RUNWAY AS THEIR PARENTS DROVE AWAY ON A SIX MILE DRIVE THROUGH SYDNEY TO GOVERNMENT HOUSE. THE ROYAL FAMILY HINGLED WITH THE AIRPORT CROWD FOR A SHORT TIME.

ABOUT 250,000 HOLIDAYMAKERS CHEERED THE ROYAL FAMILY WHEN THEY ATTENDED THE ROYAL EASTER SHOW, WHERE THEY SAW EXHIBITIONS OF HORSE JUMPING AND WOOD CHOPPING. THE QUEEN, PRINCE PHILIP AND THEIR CHILDREN APPEARED UNCONCERNED OVER A HEAVY DOWNFALL. THEY ARRIVED IN OPEN CARRIAGES BEFORE ALIGHTING AND WALKING THROUGH THE SHOWGROUND, HINGLING WITH THE HUGE CROWD.

AND AUSTRALIAN REPORTER CLAIMED HE HEARD PRINCESS ANNE COMPLAIN ABOUT THE STRONG WIND AT THE SHOWGROUND, WHICH WAS BLOWING TWO 3-FOOT STREAMERS ATTACHED TO HER HAT ACROSS HER FACE. "HELL, I CAN'T SEE IN THIS BOLLDY WIND", SHE WAS REPORTED TO HAVE SAID.

DURING THE FIVE-WEEK VISIT -- THE LAST LEG OF THEIR PACIFIC TOUR -- THE ROYAL FAMILY WILL TRAVEL THE LENGTH AND BREDTH OF AUSTRALIA. IT IS THE QUEEN'S FIRST VISIT TO THE VAST CONTINENT FOR SEVEN YEARS.

THE TOUR COINCIDES WITH THE ??-CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS OF THE LANDING OF THE BRITISH NAVIGATOR, CAPTAIN JAMES COOK, AND THE QUEEN'S PRESENCE AT A RE-ENACTMENT OF HIS LANDING AT BOTONY BAY, SYDNEY, ON APRIL 29 WILL SERVE AS A REMINDER OF AUSTRALIA'S BRITISH HERITAGE.
