    Background: LIVORNO, ITALY

On Friday (19 March) Pope John Paul toured a factory in Livorno, Italy. The firm was a Belgian-owned company, Solvay limited, whose Polish branch in Krakow provided the future Pontiff with work for four years during the Nazi occupation of Poland in the Second World War. During his visit, the Pope exchanged views with left wing workers at the factory, but made no reference to the remarks of the workers about Poland, El Salvador, and confrontation between different groups in society. Pope John Paul told the workers of his views about the depersonalisation of much of the work performed in modern societies, and appealed for social justice.
