  • Description

Durban's seafaring wanderer, Mr Donald Shave, made a final entry in his log book after spending five months at sea, alone in his yacht, the Colin Archer, during which he travelled some 15,000 miles form plymouth, England, to South Africa. He arrived in Durban Saturday afternoon.

Mr Shave's adventurous five-month single-handed sail - his sole companion on the voyage was Winkie, a black and white mongrel presented to him in Rio de Janeiro - took him from Plymouth in November 1956, to Vigo, in northern Spain, the Canaries, Rio de Janeiro, Tristan da Cunha, Capetown and Durban.

Accompanied by his brother John for the last leg of the journey from Cape Town, which took him an anxious 24 days, Mr Shave received a stormy welcome in Durban, ploughing through one of the roughest gales experienced for some time. Shave said: "I was really hardly ever on my own on the ocean. Crossing from Africa to South America I saw quite a good deal of bird life in mid-Atlantic."
Now Donald Shave is going to settle down - at least, that is what he says. "I'm going to settle in the Union," added the bearded, bronzed and tattered yachtsman. And the first thing he was going to do was get rid of that beard.

Mr Jack Shave, a Durban business man, and Mrs Shave, were on the quayside to greet him when he tied up.

When the excitement of arrival has died down ??? have had this to say to our reporter......
