SYNOPSIS: An international field of nine cycling teams made last minute preparations in Rabat on Thursday for the start of the seventh Tour of Morocco. Ahead of them lay ten-days of competitive cycling over a fourteen-hundred kilometre route. Teams from France and Poland were strongly favoured as potential winners.
The Moroccan team got encouragement from Prince Moulay Abdallah before the start. This year's tour differs from previous competitions since it avoids the mountains of southern Morocco. So the accent this year will be on speed as much as endurance during the predominantly flat stages.
Prince Moulay started the filed on the first stage. Other countries represented by teams in this year's tour are Italy, Algeria, and Switzerland. Regional and multi-national teams make up the field. During the first stage of the tour, the competitors covered the hundred-and-thirty-eight kilometres to Meknes.
