The Turkish and Greek Cypriot leaders have agreed on a general release of all remaining prisoners of war. Greek Cypriot President Glafkos Clerides and the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash on Friday (20 September) met for three hours to seal the agreement.
After the meeting, Mr, Denktash said the agreement would cover the 4200 prisoners not included in the earlier, partial transfer. The new exchange was expected to begin after next Monday (23 September)... the date of completion for the first exchange. More than 240 sick and wounded prisoners were exchanged last Monday (16 September) in the first transfer since the Turkish invasion of 20 July.
Mr. Denktash sad the meeting concerned prisoners only. The plight of an estimated 226,000 refugees was not discussed. This subject is expected to take priority at the next meeting between the two leaders.
Earlier on Friday, Mr. Clerides met two members of the Council of Europe visiting Cyprus. That meeting was a prelude to Mr. Denktash's proposed trip to Strasbourg on Monday, when he will address the council.
