  • Description

The Israeli Government is going ahead with plans to establish three more Jewish settlements on the disputed West Bank, following international criticism including disapproval by the United States. The U.S. showed its disapproval in a statement issued by the State Department saying the move was 'unhelpful to peace', but the criticism was firmly rejected by Israel on Sunday (21 August).

SYNOPSIS: The rejection came at the regular weekly meeting of the Israeli cabinet, presided over by Prime Minister Menachem Begin. The new settlements are to be built in Judea and Samaria on the West Bank, occupied by Israel after the 1967 war. Since coming to power in May this year, Mr Begin's government has stressed Israel's historic right to the territory. But Mr Begin said the row would not affect U.S. Israeli friendship, while Cabinet Secretary Arye Naor pointed out the plans were formed by the previous government in April.
