Background: The Central Committee of the Czechoslovak Communist Party and the Central Committee of the National Front of Czechoslovakia met in a joint session in the Spanish Hall of Prague on Friday (17 September).

The official session was opened by the member of the Praesidium of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and Prime Minister of the Cabinet, Lubomir Strougal. Gustav Husak, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the party, then delivered a speech on the general elections which, are scheduled to take place later this year.
