  • Description

A CABLE BROKE ON THE PATSCHERKOFEL CABLE RAILWAY IN AUSTRIA ON MONDAY AND A CABIN HURTLED ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY FEET (36 METRES) DOWN THE RAILWAY BEFORE THE EMERGENCY BRAKE STOPPED IT WITH A JERK. THIRTY PASSENGERS WERE INJURED.

POLICE SAID THAT THE ACCIDENT WAS CAUSED BY A BRAKE FAILURE ON ONE OF THE RAILWAY'S FOUR CABINS. UNABLE TO STOP, IT CRASHED AGAINST THE UPPER STATION BREAKING THE CABLE AND SENDING THE CABIN PLUMMETING DOWNWARDS.

THE EMERGENCY BRAKE BROUGHT THE CABIN TO A STOP - AND THE STRONG VIBRATIONS CAUSED OTHER CABINS TO SWING WILDLY. SEVERAL PASSENGERS ON THESE CARS WERE AMONG THE INJURED.

THE PATSCHERKOFEL RAILWAY WAS MODERNISED JUST OVER A YEAR AGO, BEFORE THE WINTER OLYMPICS, IN WHICH IT CARRIED COMPETITORS IN THE MEN'S DOWNHILL RACE TO THEIR STARTING POSITIONS.

(A CABLE DISASTER OF A MORE SINISTER KIND WAS NARROWLY AVERTED ON FRIDAY WHEN A ROUTINE CHECK ON THE FIVE MILE SKI-LIFT CABLE UP THE BRAUNECK PEAK IN THE BAVARIAN ALPS REVEALED THAT IT HAD BEEN ALMOST SAWN THROUGH IN THREE PLACES. MEMBERS OF A BRITISH SKI-ING PARTY FROM MUNICH WERE TO HAVE USED THE SKI-LIFT THE FOLLOWING DAY. POLICE HAVE INVESTIGATED THE INCIDENT.)
