Background: IN RECENT WEEKS INDIAN TROOPS HAVE BEEN FIGHTING NOT ONLY THE CHINESE, BUT ENERGY-SAPPING GEOGRAPHICAL AND CLIMATIC CONDITIONS TOO, AS OUR DELAYED AND CENSORED FILM REVEALS.

THE TERRAIN HAS BEEN ONE OF THE PRINCIPAL DIFFICULTIES WHICH FACE THE SOLDIERS DEFENDING THE NORTH EAST FRONTIER AGENCY WHERE RUGGED HILLS CLIMB NORTHWARDS TO MEET THE HIMALAYAS. THE EMERGENCY SUDDENLY REVEALED THE INADEQUATE BOARD AND RAIL SYSTEM FROM WHICH INDIAN UNITS WERE POORLY SERVED WITH AMMUNITION AND SUPPLIES. COMPARED TO THIS, THE CHINESE UP A MILITARY ROAD SYSTEM ON THE TIBETAN TABLELAND SINCE THEY FIRST OCCUPIED THE AREA. THE INDIAN AUTHORITIES MOVED FAST TO IMPROVED THE ROADS, USING THE HARDY LOCAL PEOPLE AS LABOUR TOGETHER WITH TIBETAN REFUGEES WHO FLED WITH THE DALAI LAMA TO INDIA TWO YEARS AGO.

INDIAN AIR FORCE DAKOTAS DROPPED SUPPLIES TO FORWARD TROOPS, AT TIMES UNDER EXTREMELY HAZARDOUS CONDITIONS. BUT EVEN THESE LOADS HAD TO BE COLLECTED FROM DROPPING ZONES AND HAULED 4000 FEET FARTHER UP THE MOUNTAINS. BUT THE BULK OF MILITARY SUPPLIES HAD TO BE MANHANDLED ALONG MILES OF NARROW MOUNTAIN TRACK CARVED OUT OF THE MOUNTAIN-SIDE, WITH A SHEER DROP ON ONE SIDE FOR THE UNWARY. YAKS AND MULES TRANSPORTED ESSENTIAL SUPPLIES, BUT VEHICLES ARE ESSENTIAL FOR FIELD-GUNS. WHEN GUN-TOWING TRUCKS BOG DOWN IN MUD OR SNOW, THE TROOPS ARE CALLED OUT TO ATTACH DRAG-LINES TO HAUL THEM OUT OF TROUBLE.

LITTLE SNOW HAS FALLEN YET, BUT THE WEATHER IS BITTERLY COLD, AND THE INDIAN TROOPS RUSHED TO THE MOUNTAIN AREAS HAVE HAD LITTLE TIME TO ACCLIMATISE THEMSELVES TO EITHER THE WEATHER OR THE DIFFERENT TECHNIQUES OF FIGHTING IN RUGGED, REMOTE, MOUNTAINOUS REGIONS. THE TROOPS LIVE IN HUTS MADE OF HEAPED STONES; THEIR WATER COMES FROM MELTED SNOW. EVEN FOR THE EXPERIENCED MEN, THE THIN AIR MAKES EXERTION DIFFICULT.
