  • Description

Turkish Cypriot leader, Mr Rauf Denktas met Turkish Prime Minister, mr Bulent Ecevit in Ankara, Friday (1st December) for vital talks on the future of the Turkish community on Cyprus. Mr Denktas had only just arrived back from New where the United Nations Security Council, has called on Greek and Turkish Cypriots to resume negotiations.

SYNOPSIS: Mr Denktas was met in Ankara by the Turkish Foreign Minister, Mr Okcun, who informed him of local development before their meeting with Prime Minister, Mr Ecevit. In Mr Denktas' absence in New York, seven members of the cabinet of the self proclaimed Turkish Federated State of Cyprus had resigned.

The mass resignation of ministers was major discussion point for Prime Minister, Mr Ecevit, Mr Denktas and Mr Okcun. Although there has been no official explanation for the cabinet upheaval, it follows closely on allegations in Turkish Cypriot newspapers that the self-styled government was planning secret tourist deals with foreign companies. The United Nations Security Council resolution calling on Greek and Turkish Cypriots to resume negotiations on the long standing Cyprus dispute was the focal point of the meeting. Mr Denktas was pessimistic about solving the Cyprus question soon.
