One man was killed and four others, wounded including a policeman, during a clash in Lisbon on Wednesday afternoon. The clash came during a two-hour strike by shop assistants protesting the current government wage freeze. The dead man was a 23 year old, who was picketing a shop which had refused to close. Police opened fire on demonstrators who were stoning them while they were trying to intervene in the picket line.
