  • Description

The Belgium Father Pire, who received the Nobel Price 1958 for the Peace, is the third Belgium citizen who received this honour.

Father Pire was born in Dinant in February 1910, and after his classical studies he entered the Dominican Monastery of Sarte near Huy in 1928. Father Pire also studied in Rome and at the University of Louvain, after which he teached philosophy and sociology for ten years. During the 2nd World War, Father Pire was the Chaplain of the Underground Army and agent of the Intelligence Service. For his work during the War he received the "Croix de Guerre" with palms together with many other distinctions. In May 1949, Father Pire visited all the Austrian camps, sana's and homes where at that moment there were no less than 60.000 displaced persons. That is when he wrote his book: "From the Rhine to the Danube with 60.000 Displaced Persons". The most important of his works, The Help to Displaced Persons was officially created in 1950 under the high protection of H.M. Queen Elisabeth. It is in 1956 that Father Pire began with the creation of the European Villages for Displaced Persons. Up to now there are already 5 of these villages, the last one of them was inaugurated on Sept. 21, 1958 in Spiesen, near Sarrebruck. This village was called after Dr. Albert Scheitzer. A 6th village will be built in Norway. Father Pire also preached everywhere a crusade for a "Europe of the Heart". The help to Displaced Persons is now an International Institution. For this action, Father Pire received the Legion of Honour from the French Government. That his work is appreciated is proved by the favorable reaction in the entire world when it was announced that Father Pire had received the Nobel Price 1958 for the Peace.

We went to visit Father Pire in his office in Huy, a town situated on the Meuse, between Namur and Liege. Since the news became known that he received the Nobel Price, Father Pire receives countless cables with congratulations and numerous telephone calls. Members of the International Press are still calling upon him now to ask for an interview.
