    Background: Saudi Arabia has given Guatemala 280,000 pound sterling (500,000 U.S. dollars) for earthquake relief. The South American country as still licking its wounds from the devastating earthquake that struck in February this year killing 23,000 people and leaving another 1,500,000 homeless.

    The Saudi Arabian ambassador to the Untied Nations, Mr. Jamil Baroody, presented his country's gift by cheque to U.N. Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim in the Untied Nations on Tuesday (18 May).

    As he handed the money to Mr. Waldheim Mr. Baroody conveyed his deepest sympathy to Guatemala and hoped the gift would help alleviate some of the suffering. Mr. Waldheim thanked Mr. Baroody for his country's generosity. Guatemalan ambassador Juan Luis Orantes-Luan was also at the presentation.

    The Guatemalan government has estimated that the total cost of reconstruction after the quake will be about 14,000 million pounds sterling (100 million U.S. dollars).

    SYNOPSIS: In the Untied Nations on Tuesday Saudi Arabia's ambassador Jamil Baroody presented a cheque for 280,000 pounds to Secretary General Kurt Waldheim to aid Guatemalan earthquake victims.

    The Guatemalan ambassador Senor Juan Luis Orantes-Luna was also at the presentation of the cheque. Twenty three thousand people died and another million and a half were left homeless by the earthquake which hit the South American country last February.

    Mr. Waldheim thanked Mr. Baroody for his country's generosity.
