    SOUTH KOREA THIS WEEK CELEBRATED ARMED FORCES DAY WITH A MASS PARADE OF MILITARY MIGHT SEOUL, THE CAPITAL. MAJOR-GENERAL JUNG HUI PARK, SOUTH KOREA'S ACTING PRESIDENT, TOOK THE SALUTE AT THE MARCH PAST, ALONG WITH TOP GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS.

    AN ESTIMATED 100,000 KOREANS WATCHED THE PARADE, SPEAR-HEADED BY SQUADS OF CRACK TROOPS. THEN CAME MOBILE HEAVY ARMOUR, INCLUDING TANKS, FOLLOWED BY ROCKETS AND MISSILES.

    THE PARADE -- ON OCTOBER 1 -- MARKED THE 15TH ANNIVERSARY OF ARMED FORCES DAY. KOREA'S COMBINED ARMED FORCES NOW STAND AT ABOUT 600,000 MEN, COMPARED WITH ABOUT 47,000 AT THE TIME OF ITS FOUNDING IN 1948, AND A 115,000 AT THE OUTBREAK OF THE KOREAN CONFLICT IN 1950.

    (GENERAL PARK, WHO RECENTLY RETIRED FROM THE ARMY, HAS ACCEPTED NOMINATION AS CANDIDATE FOR SOUTH KOREA'S PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS ON OCTOBER 15. ANOTHER CANDIDATE IS SONG YO CHAN, FORMER PRIME MINISTER).
