MORE THAN 100 TOKYO UNIVERSITY STUDENTS BELONGING TO THE ZENGAKUREN ORGANISATION STAGED A DEMONSTRATION IN THE JAPANESE CAPITAL ON SUNDAY, IN PROTEST AGAINST CHINA'S SECOND NUCLEAR TEST.

THE CHINESE NUCLEAR TEST, HELD IN THE ATMOSPHERE, CAUSED DISMAY THROUGHOUT JAPAN, WHERE CHINESE NUCLEAR CAPABILITY HAS BECOME A MAJOR ISSUE FOR ELECTIONS TO THE JAPANESE UPPER DIET. BUT APART FROM THIS ONE DEMONSTRATION, THE JAPANESE PUBLIC ACCEPTED THE NEWS WITHOUT MUCH COMMENT.

A SQUAD OF RIOT POLICE SENT OUT TO CONTROL THE DEMONSTRATORS FORMED A CORDON AND REPEATED ATTEMPTS BY THE STUDENTS TO BREAK THROUGH FAILED. THERE WERE A NUMBER OF EXCHANGES AND SEVERAL STUDENTS WERE KNOCKED TO THE GROUND - BUT NONE WERE SERIOUSLY HURT. THE DEMONSTRATORS WERE BROKEN INTO SMALL GROUPS AND LATER DISPERSED.
