  • Description

The small town of Chipinga in eastern Rhodesia has become the centre for guerrilla attacks against the white minority regime from the Mozambique border.

SYNOPSIS: This farmhouse was damaged by a recent rocket attack. It all began in January when black Rhodesian guerrillas based in Mozambique decided the time for talking peace was over, and that they must expand what had been a desultory war against Rhodesia's white rulers.

Land mines, usually planted at night on the dirt roads that link the farms and tea estates, have caused fear among black and whites alike. Earlier this month a woman and her two children died when their car hit a landmine. 17-year-old Yvonne Habing died ten days after the incident. Her school friends joined Yvonne's father at the funeral last week. The attack has been blamed on Frelimo--Mozambique's ruling party. It controls the army which is providing assistance to the guerrillas.

Chipinga became the focal point of the guerrilla thrust into the east. Ti was then turned into a military base, as Rhodesian security forces arrived with helicopters, anti land-mine vehicles and troops, both black and white. The citizens have held several meetings to complain at the provocation from Frelimo. the farmers want the army to enter Mozambique and destroy Frelimo positions. But the community is split. The town dwellers don't want retaliation. Meanwhile the tea plantations suffer because the black labour force left at the start of firing.
