  • Description

North Vietnamese and Government troops are locked in the biggest battle since the January ceasefire in Quang Duc Province, in South Vietnam near the border with the Khmer Republic.

A Military Command spokesman said North Vietnamese forces, numbered at about 10,000 were attacking the Province. He said the Communist troops had launched the attack to extend a new all-weather road being built through Viet Cong border zones from the demilitarised zone to the Viet Cong-controlled town of Loc Ninh, north of Saigon.

There was no official casualty report, but Government sources said scores of troops on each side had been killed in one battle alone at Kien Duc. The Government Army has moved about 5,000 troops into Quang Duc to open Highways 14 and 88.

In the battle at Kien Duc, Government troops were isolated on a section of Highway 14, where, for the last month, they've been trying to recapture two border bases, overrun by the North Vietnamese Ninth Division. The troops on the road were under attack by shelling, infantry and tanks. As least one Government unit was forced to retreat after blowing up its 105 mm howitzers, military sources said.

A Military Command spokesman said the Communist attacks in Quang Duc had created a "very serious situation in that part of the country". He appealed to the International Commission of Control and Supervision to "stop the Communist violations of the ceasefire."
