  • Description

SHAH MOHAMMED REZA PAHLEVI OF IRAN, ACCOMPANIED BY THE EMPRESS FARAH, STARTED A 12-DAY STATE VISIT TO INDIA ON FRIDAY (3 JANUARY) BY LAYING A WREATH AT THE GANDHI MEMORIAL IN DELHI. IN THE EVENING, HE WAS GUEST OF HONOUR AT A CIVIC RECEPTION GIVEN BY THE CITIZENS OF DELHI.

AT THE RECEPTION, HELD AT DELHI'S FAMOUS RED FORT, THE SHAH WAS PRESENTED WITH A BEAUTIFUL IVORY ASHOKA PILLAR BY THE MAYOR OF DELHI, MR. HANSRAJ GUPTA.

THE SHAH AND EMPRESS, ACCOMPANIED BY A 20-MEMBER ENTOURAGE, INCLUDING IRANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER, MR. ARDESHIR ZAHEDI, AND FINANCE MINISTER, FR. JAMSHID AMOUZEGAR, WERE INVITED TO INDIA BY PRESIDENT ZAHIR HUSAIN. THE VISIT IS EXPECTED TO PAVE THE WAY FOR FURTHER INDUSTRIAL COLLABORATION BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES.

YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) THE SHAH REASSERTED HIS COUNTRY'S CLAIM TO BAHRAIN, AND WARNED THAT IRAN COULD NOT ACCEPT THAT THE PERSIAN GULF STATE SHOULD BE OFFERED TO OTHER PEOPLE BY THE BRITISH WHEN THEY LEFT THE AREA. IRANIAN CLAIMS TO BAHRAIN HAVE BECOME MORE INSISTENT SINCE BRITAIN DECIDED TO WITHDRAW ITS MILITARY FORCES - MAINLY BASED IN BAHRAIN - FROM THE GULF BY 1972.

THE SHAH - MAKING WHAT HE DESCRIBED AS HIS FIRST OFFICIAL STATEMENT ON THE SUBJECT - SAID THE BRITISH HAD SEPARATED BAHRAIN FROM IRAN 150 YEARS AGO. HE TOLD NEWSMEN IRAN WAS, HOWEVER, TOTALLY AGAINST THE USE OF FORCE FOR THE ACQUISITION OF A TERRITORY AGAINST THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE..
