Background: IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA -- CLOSE TO THE TRACKS OF THE SOUTHERN PACIFIC RAILROAD -- IS THE SMALL SETTLEMENT, WITH A POPULATION OF ABOUT 30, WHICH IS RATHER GRANDLY CALLED "SURF CITY". THE PEOPLE WHO LIVE THERE ARE THE EMPLOYEES, AND THEIR FAMILIES, OF THE SOUTHERN PACIFIC RAILROAD.

SURF CITY IS IN A "DANGER AREAS" ABOUT SEVEN MILES FROM ONE OF THE MAIN AMERICAN MISSILE AND ROCKET TESTING GROUNDS -- THE PACIFIC COAST MISSILE TEST STATION AT VANDENBURG AIR FORCE BASE, TWO HUNDRED MILES NORTH OF LOS ANGELES.

EVERYTIME THERE IS A MISSILE SHOOT AT VANDENBURG, ALL THE RESIDENTS OF SURF CITY HAVE TO BE EVACUATED. CHILDREN ARE SENT TO SCHOOL, WHICH IS A SAFE DISTANCE AWAY, AND THE OTHER RESIDENTS ARE TAKEN BY SPECIAL BUSES TO A SAFE AREA.

THE FAMILIES LEAVE THEIR HOMES, WITH ALL THE WINDOWS OPEN SO THAT THE FORCE OF THE BLAST WILL NOT UPROOT THEIR HOMES.

FILM SHOWS ONE FAMILY ON THE DAY OF A SHOOT. IT SHOWS THE CHILDREN LEAVING FOR SCHOOL WHILE THE MOTHER AND YOUNGEST CHILD ARE TAKEN BY BUS TO A PARK SITUATED OUTSIDE THE DANCER ZONE.

THERE, THEY JOIN OTHER FAMILIES FOR A PICNIC LUNCH. MEANWHILE THE ROCKET OR MISSILE IS LAUNCHED, AND THE INHABITANTS ARE FREE TO RETURN TO SURF CITY.

(THE ATLAS MISSILE SHOWN ON THIS FILM IS ONE FROM A LAUNCHING AT CAPE CANAVERAL IN FLORIDA BECAUSE FILM OF A LAUNCHING AT VANDENBURG IS NOT AVAILABLE. HOWEVER, ATLAS MISSILES ARE LAUNCHED FROM VANDENBURG.)
