• Short Summary

AN ELEVENTH HOUR BID BY THE SINGAPORE PRIME MINISTER, MR. LEE KUAN YEW, TO AVERT?

  • Description

AN ELEVENTH HOUR BID BY THE SINGAPORE PRIME MINISTER, MR. LEE KUAN YEW, TO AVERT A STRIKE OF SOME 1,000 POSTAL AND TELECOMMUNICATION WORKERS FAILED ON THE NIGHT OF DECEMBER 1, AND THE STRIKE WAS ON FROM ONE MINUTE PAST MIDNIGHT.

THE STRIKE IS IN PROTEST AGAINST THE CENTRAL MALAYSIAN GOVERNMENT'S FAILURE TO SETTLE THE WORKERS' CLAIMS FOR INCREASED WAGES AND BETTER CONDITIONS OF SERVICES.

THE CLAIMS WERE FIRST SERVED ON THE SINGAPORE GOVERNMENT IN OCTOBER LAST YEAR AND WERE REFERRED TO THE INDUSTRIAL ARBITRATION COURT WHICH DISMISSED THE CLAIMS AFTER THE DEPARTMENTS CAME UNDER THE CENTRAL MALAYSIAN GOVERNMENT UNDER THE TERMS OF THE MERGER AGREEMENT.

THOSE AFFECTED ARE DIVISIONS TWO AND THREE OFFICERS.

BECAUSE OF THE STRIKE, IT MIGHT NOT BE POSSIBLE FOR THE TELECOMMUNICATION DEPARTMENT TO ACCEPT TELEGRAPH AND TELEX MESSAGES IN SINGAPORE FOR TRANSMISSION TO ANY DESTINATION, OR TO ACCEPT SUCH MESSAGES FROM OVERSEAS.

TELEGRAPH AND TELEX MESSAGES WOULD CONTINUE TO BE ACCEPTED IN MALAYA, SABAH (NORTH BORNEO) AND SARAWAK FOR ALL DESTINATIONS.

AIRCRAFT OF INTERNATIONAL AIRLINES PASSING THROUGH SINGAPORE WILL ALSO BE AFFECTED BY THE STRIKE AS THEIR FLIGHT MESSAGES ARE NORMALLY MONITORED BY TELECOMS STAFF AT THE AIRPORT.
