    THE AMERICAN AIRCRAFT CARRIER "CONSTELLATION" - DESCRIBED AS THE WORLD'S LARGEST SHIP - RETURNED TO BROOKLYN SHIPYARD, NEW YORK, NOV 7, AFTER HER FIRST SEA TRIALS HAD ENDED IN TRAGEDY.

    DURING A FULL-POWER ENDURANCE RUN OFF THE ATLANTIC COAST, NOV 6, FIRE BROKE OUT IN AN ENGINE ROOM AS GUSHING FUEL OIL IGNITED ON A HOT STEAM PIPE. ALTHOUGH THE BLAZE WAS BROUGHT UNDER CONTROL WITHIN HALF AN HOUR, FOUR MEN WERE KILLED AND TEN INJURED.

    LAST DECEMBER, WHEN THE "CONSTELLATION" WAS STILL UNDER CONSTRUCTION, A FIRE ALMOST GUTTED HER AND KILLED FIFTY SHIPYARD WORKERS. SHE WAS REBUILT AFTER THIS FIRST DISASTER AND COMMISSIONED ON OCT 27.
