  • Description

THIS WEEK, FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE THE REVOLUTION IN 1959, CUBAN SHIPS DOCKED IN LONDON. THIS SHIP, THE "SIERRA MAESTRA", WAS CARRYING A CARGO OF 11,000 TONS OF SUGAR -- CUBA'S LARGEST EXPORT, VITAL TO HER ECONOMY.

ALTHOUGH THE UNITED STATES HAS IMPOSED AN ECONOMIC BLOCKADE ON THE COUNTRY, THE UNITED KINGDOM HAS CONTINUED TO TRADE WITH CUBA. DURING THE TIME OF THE REVOLUTION, TRADE BETWEEN BRITAIN AND CUBA DROPPED DRAMATICALLY FROM NEARLY 18 MILLIONS POUNDS IN 1958 TO JUST OVER 5 MILLION POUNDS IN 1961. BUT SINCE THEN TRADE HAS BEGUN TO BUILD UP AGAIN AND LAST YEAR WAS OVER 7 MILLION POUNDS. THIS YEAR IT MAY WELL INCREASE AGAIN.

BEFORE THE REVOLUTION CUBA USED TO EXPORT 560 MILLION DOLLAR'S WORTH OF EXPORTS TO THE UNITED STATES, NOW, OFFICIALLY, THERE IS NONE. CUBA LOOKS TO THE COMMUNIST COUNTRIES NOW. RUSSIA BUYS 300 MILLION DOLLAR'S WORTH OF EXPORTS PER YEAR, AND THE CHINESE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OVER 100 MILLION DOLLAR'S WORTH.

CUBA IS THE WORLD'S LARGEST PRODUCER OF SUGAR, WITH ITS BY-PRODUCTS IT FURNISHES 90 PER CENT OF THE VALUE OF THE NATION'S EXPORT. THERE ARE SOME 160 MILLS, INCLUDING 40 OF THE LARGEST WHICH WERE TAKEN OVER FROM AMERICAN INTERESTS AND REPRESENT 30 PER CENT OF THE TOTAL OUTPUT.
