  • Description

FOUR AMERICAN SAILORS, WHO DESERTED THEIR SHIP IN PROTEST AGAINST THE VIETNAM CONFLICT, ARRIVED IN STOCKHOLM FROM MOSCOW TODAY (FRIDAY) AND MADE IT KNOWN THAT THEY WOULD SEEK POLITICAL ASYLUM IN SWEDEN. THE SAILORS DESERTED FROM THE AMERICAN AIR-CRAFT CARRIER, INTREPID, IN JAPAN ON OCTOBER 23 AFTER THE SHIP RETURNED FROM VIETNAM. NEWS OF THEIR DECISION TO ASK FOR ASYLUM WAS ANNOUNCED BY THE CHAIRMAN OF THE SWEDISH COMMITTEE FOR VIETNAM, MR. BERTIL SVAHNSTROEM.

THE DESERTERS ARE RICHARD BAILEY, JOHN BARILLA, MICHAEL LINDER, AND CRAIG ANDERSON. TWO OF THEM, APPARENTLY SPEAKING FOR THE GROUP, SAID THEY INTENDED TO LIVE PERMANENTLY IN SWEDEN. BUT IT IS UP TO THE SWEDISH ALIENS COMMISSION TO DECIDE WHETHER THEY WILL BE GIVEN ASYLUM. THE FOUR DESERTERS WENT TO THE SOVIET UNION AFTER LEAVING THEIR SHIP IN JAPAN. BUT AFTER A STAY OF MORE THAN A MONTH, THEY DECIDED TO GO TO SWEDEN.
