    The British Prime Minister Edward Heath and President Georges Pompidou began their two day summit meeting at the Elysee Palace, on Monday, on the future of the European Economic Community and its relations with the rest of the world, particularly the United States.

    The two leaders were reported to have made a good start to the talks After a working lunch, at which they were joined by senior French Ministers, the French Finance Ministers Valery Giscard d'Estaing said he though progress had been made on European and international monetary problems. "This is a matter on which British and French views are not too far apart", he told reporters.

    The monetary and economic organisation of the EEC was expected to play a major part in the discussions. The French are anxious for progress towards economic and monetary union, implying an end to the floating of sterling. They stress the need for a common Community position before the forthcoming world trade talks.

    The talks will also cover the future of the controversial Common Market agricultural policy and Market institutions.

    The Heath-Pompidou talks are due to stretch over a total of eight hours. They come at a time of heavy international diplomatic activity and just ten days before the French leader meets President Nixon for talks on relations between the United States and the Common Market.

    Mr. Heath and President Pompidou will also discuses European security East-West relations and the Middle East situation.

    the leaders were meeting for the first time since Britain, the Irish Republic and Denmark joined the Common Market.
