Background: A sixteen storey Boston luxury apartment building in its final stages of construction suddenly collapsed on Monday (25 Jan.) and it was feared three workers were trapped. Police and firemen kept the building cordoned-off during the night for fear of a further collapse.
The collapse began in mid-afternoon, apparently on the top floor balcony of the structure, and the concrete slabs on the building's south side began to shear off one by one as if they were a row of falling dominoes. A witness said, "It shook the ground a block away."
When the collapse began, workers on the ground rescued three men on a crane bucket, and it appeared everyone was out of the building shell before the major collapse occurred 13 minutes later. But the contractors said later three men from the work crew were unaccounted for.
The city's building department was checking to see if the concrete might have been poured improperly in the recent freezing weather, but a spokesman for the contractors said full safety precautions had been observed.
