Background: VISNEWS June 2 filmed yet another demonstration against Brazil's rocketing inflation. Thousands of people sat on the lines, stopping trains passing through Jundiahi, in protest against a rise in rail fares. Trainloads of armed State Police were brought up from Sao Paulo to disperse the human blockage.
Fares have been increasing steadily over the last three years, but a 25 per cent increase announced June 1 was the straw that broke the camel's back. For two days the demonstrators blocked the line between Sao Paulo and Santos--a large seaport.
Tear-gas was used to good effect and the line was cleared. Nobody was hurt ad everything seemed to pass of quietly...but armed police continue to patrol the line insuring against further incidents.
