  • Description

The President of the three-nations military committee in Chad, the Sudanese vice-president, Monsieur Aboulgassim Mohamed Ibrahim has called upon Frolinat rebel forces to repeat the cease-fire which they allegedly broke in April. Monsieur Ibrahim also urged the rebels to shape their broadcasts on Radio Frolinat towards a national reconciliation in Chad.

SYNOPSIS: The call came after the military committee met in N'djamena, the Chad capital, to consider ways to have the cease-fire restored. Its members, from Niger, the Sudan and the Libyan Jimahiriyah, are charged with controlling cease-fire, which Chad and Frolinat authorities signed in Benghazi, last March. A communique said the committee wanted to reduce the numbers of French forces in Chad, and to achieve a stability that would help bring about real unity between the opposing sides. Frolinat forces were said to have broken the ceasefire with an attack on Salal, a city some 280 miles (about 450 kilometres) north-east of N'djamena, France, which maintains defence agreements with Chad, its former colony, sent 450 Foreign Legionnaires about 200 paratroops there, as well as 10 supersonic warplanes. In France, President Valery Giscard d'Estaing said for the first time that the boosted force of more than one thousand French troops in Chad would go into action if needed to defend the country.

Previously, France had described its force of 500 there as 'volunteers' who were advisers for Chad's government force, and not combatants. Several hundred of the 4,000 French citizens who were in Chad when the Frolinat march began have been evacuated to France.
