  • Description

A rally of more than 1500 people representing the Greater Israel Movement gathered in Jerusalem's Menorah Square yesterday (Wednesday, May 5) to protest against the Rogers plan for peace in the Middle East and, in particular, the reopening of the Suez Canal.

The Greater Israel Movement is described as a "super party" made up of members of the Government and of the opposition parties in the Knesset (Parliament). The anti-Rogers Plan rally was addressed by the Leader of the Opposition, Menahem Begin, and, as he spoke, he shared the official platform with delegates from his Gahal Party and from the Labour Party and the National Religious Party (both of which form the Government coalition).

SYNOPSIS: A crowd of more than fifteen hundred people representing the Greater Israel Movement gathered in Jerusalem's Menorah Square on Wednesday to protest against the Rogers Plan for peace in the Middle East and, in particular, the reopening of the Suez Canal.

The Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Menahem Begin, addressed the demonstrators, whose movement is made up of members of the Government and of the opposition parties. In his speech, Mr Begin called on Israel's leaders and people to stand united in opposing the Rogers Plan because, he said: "No international force is going to protect us! God protect us from our friends - we'll manage our enemies!" Then, in a direct message to the United States, he added: "Do you really want the Suez Canal Open? Open for sixty-seven Soviet ships to come to the Bay of Tonkin? Honestly, tell us - do you really want the Canal open?"
