  • Description

AT THE END OF SEPTEMBER, MILITANT CANADIAN INDIANS STAGED A VIOLENT DEMONSTRATION OUTSIDE PARLIAMENT IN OTTOWA AND OCCUPIED A VACANT GOVERNMENT BUILDING. NEARLY A MONTH LATER, THEY ARE STILL HOLDING THE BUILDING - WHICH THEY CALL THEIR "EMBASSY" - AND ARE PLANNING FURTHER PROTESTS.

THE SEPTEMBER CONFRONTATION FOCUSES ATTENTION ON THE COMPLAINTS OF CANADA'S 300 THOUSAND INDIANS, WHO CLAIM THAT GOVERNMENT APPROPRIATION OF BILLIONS OF DOLLARS AND THOUSANDS OF MAN HOURS HAS DONE LITTLE TO RESOLVE THEIR BASIC GRIEVANCES.

YOUNG INDIANS ARE GROWING IMPATIENT WITH THE WAY THEIR AFFAIRS ARE CONDUCTED BY ELECTED "ELDERS" AND ARE BECOMING INCREASINGLY MILITANT. THERE IS TALK OF MAOIST-STYLE COMMUNIST INFILTRATION AMONG THEIR RANKS, BUT LOUIS CAMERON, LEADER OF THE OJIBWAY WARRIOR SOCIETY, WHICH SPEARHEADS THE PROTEST GROUP HAS DENIED THIS.

OBSERVERS OF THE SITUATION IN OTTOWA SAY THAT THE SUCCESS OF THE NEW MILITANCY WILL BE PUT TO THE TEST BY THE STRENGTH OF A PROTEST RALLY PLANNED FOR THE NEAR FUTURE. MEANWHILE, THE INDIANS ARE CONTINUING THEIR PROTEST BY REFUSING TO VACATE THEIR SELF-STYLED "EMBASSY."
