    A BRITISH EMBASSY OFFICIAL WAS PRESENT AT THE FIRST PERFORMANCE BECAUSE THE PHOTOGRAPHER, PLAYED BY ACTOR THEODOR HAUGEN, LOOKS JUST LIKE LORD SNOWDON, ANTONY ARMSTRONG-JONES, AND MARIE ANDERSEN WHO PLAYS THE PRINCESS, IS NOT UNLIKE PRINCESS MARGARET.

    ITS AUTHOR, ALEXANDER KIELLAND, ADMITTED THE PLAY WAS BASED ON THE ROMANCE OF PRINCESS MARGARET AND LORD SNOWDON WHICH, HE SAID, FASCINATED HIM. HE SAID THE AIM OF THE PLAY WAS TO ATTACK PROTOCOL AND THE STRICTURES ON FREEDOM IN ROYAL CIRCLES.

    OTHER PRINCIPAL CHARACTERS IN THE PLAY INCLUDE THE QUEEN OF ANGELAND, HER TALL DISTINGUISHED CONSORT - THE DUKE OF ELDENBERG, AND A CIGAR-SMOKING PRIME MINISTER WHO LOOKS LIKE SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL.

    THE PLOT IS A SIMPLE ONE. DESPITE THE PROTESTS OF THE DUKE, THE PHOTOGRAPHER, ELMER SMITH, MARRIES THE PRINCESS AND THE COUPLE MOVE INTO THE ROYAL CASTLE. AFTER A WHILE ELMER WANTS TO GO BACK TO HIS STUDIO, THE FAMILY OBJECTS, BUT HE HAS HIS WAY. EVENTUALLY A BABY IS BORN AND PEACE IS RESTORED. THE HAPPY FAMILY REUNION IS RECORDED FOR POSTERITY BY THE BUTLER, WHO CLICKS A CAMERA.
