Background: LENASIA, NEAR JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA

Members of the multi-racial United Democratic Front (UDF) party organised a youth rally recently to protest about South Africa's new constitution. After general elections in August the Coloured, Indian and White communities will have separate chambers in a tricameral parliament. Eighty seats have been reserved for Coloureds, forty for the Indians and one hundred and sixty for the Whites. The country's eighteen-million Blacks will not be represented. Four Coloured parties are competing for the eighty seats. But the multi-racial United Democratic Front is not being allowed to stand because of its open support for Black majority rule and its condemnation of the new constitution. The UDF rally for youth was addressed by a variety of speakers from various UDF-affiliated student and youth organisations. The main speaker was the president of COSAS (The Congress of South African Students), Lulu Johnstone. He described the new constitution as an attempt by the South African government to entrench apartheid by buying off the Coloured and Indian communities.
