Background: NIGERIAN TROOPS HAVE TAKEN OGOJA TOWN WITHOUT A FIGHT. THEY MADE AN UNOPPOSED ADVANCE THROUGH THE JUNGLE ON THE TOWN YESTERDAY (19 JULY).

THE ADVANCING ARMY SEARCHED FARMHOUSE AND OTHER BUILDINGS IN ITS ADVANCE ON THE TOWN. PRISONERS TAKEN WERE INTERROGATED BY NIGERIAN OFFICERS.

IN THE TOWN TRIUMPHANT NIGERIANS CAPTURED A LARGE QUANTITY OF ARMS AND SET UP PATROLS TO GUARD THE STREETS.

IN ENUGU, CAPITAL OF THE BREAKAWAY STATE OF BIAFRA, THE SECCESSIONIST LEADER, LIEUTENANT COLONEL ODUMEGWU OJUKWU SAID THAT HIS FORCES HAD DELIBERATELY ABANDONED OGOJA TO THE ADVANCING NIGERIANS. HE EXPLAINED THAT BECAUSE OF THE NIGERIAN'S SUPERIORITY IN HEAVY ARMS AND ARMOURED CARS, BIAFRAN TROOPS HAD BEEN ORDERED TO AVOID ANY DIRECT CLASH.

BRIDGES ON THE MAIN ROAD FROM OGOJA TOWARDS ENUGU HAD BEEN CLOWN UP, HE SAID, AND NIGERIAN TROOPS IN THE AREA WERE ON FOOT AND EXPERIENCING SEVERE DIFFICULTY WITH SUPPLY PROBLEMS, ??? COLONEL OJUKWU CLAIMED THAT THE OGOJA AREA WAS NOT A STRATEGIC ONE AND IT WOULD MERELY BE A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE IT WAS RECAPTURED.

HE ALSO PREDICTED THAT A MAJOR BATTLE WILL BE FOUGHT FOR THE TOWN OF NSUKKA IN THE NEXT FEW DAYS. THE UNIVERSITY TOWN WAS A NO-MAN'S LAND AT THE MOMENT, HE SAID, WITH NEITHER SIDE IN COMPLETE CONTROL.

THE NIGERIAN FORCES HAD CALLED IN TWO BATTALIONS FROM THE WESTERN REGION AND ONE FROM THE NORTHERN BASE OF MAKURDI. THESE WERE NOW TRYING TO LINK UP WITH THE SIX BATTALIONS ALREADY COMMITTED IN THE NSUKKA SECTORS, COLONEL OJUKWU SAID.

MEANTIME A COMMUNIQUE FROM THE FEDERAL AUTHORITIES IN LAGOS, CAPITAL OF NIGERIA, SAID FEDERAL TROOPS WERE CONTINUING TO CONSOLIDATE THEIR POSITIONS IN OGOJA AND NSUKKA PROVINCES AND WERE MAINTAINING THEIR PUSH ???? - TOWARDS THE BIAFRAN CAPITAL OF ENUGU.

AS THE PUSH WENT ON NIGERIAN AIR FORCE AIRCRAFT CONTINUED S RAFING RUNS.
