  • Description

Hundreds of Moslem worshippers joined Mauritania's President Ould Daddah in observing the Festival of Sacrifice, "Eid-El-Kebir". The three-day festival celebrated throughout the moslem world coincides with the annual pilgrimage to Mecca, and the associated thanksgiving prayers at the nearby village of Mina.

President Ould Daddah joined the Imam of Nouakchott for prayers in the Mauritanian capital on Friday (4 January). It is a service the President traditionally attends.

Eid-El-Kebir, the "Great Festival" of the Islamic calendar, begins on the tenth day of the last month of the moslem year. Throughout the moslem world, all those who can afford to do so, sacrifice a sheep, and either eat it themselves or give the meat to the poor. The ceremony originates from Abraham's sacrifice of a ram -- an even recorded by both the Christian and Muslim faiths.
