  • Description

The 'Law and Order' Campaign of right-wing French Presidential candidate, Jean Royer, has attracted a fair amount of disorder during the past weeks. But when he made his final speech of the presidential campaign in Paris on Friday (May 3), the violence reached new heights.

Inside the Palais des Expositions, six thousand followers listened to M. Royer's fervent call for 'Morality, Purity and Severity'. But outside, militant left-winners, who had come to disrupt the rally, clashed with a large force of riot police. At one stage the militants hurled battles of acid at the police.

Mr. Royer resigned as Minister for Posts and Telecommunications to contest the elections on a flaw and order' ticket. He is considered to be the spokesman for France's small shopkeepers and businessmen, and is rated as the fourth strongest candidate.

His preaching that France must return to a moral order -- including respect for parents -- has made him the target for young left-wingers. Many of his rallies have been disrupted by rowdy scenes.

In his speech M. Royer returned to a familier theme -- that whoever was elected President would affect not just politics but the whole moral tone of the nation.
