Background: Police and Negro demonstrators clashed in the streets of Baton Rouge, Louisiana on Monday in a riot which left four people dead, and 22 injured.
Of the dead, two were sheriff's deputies.
The riot apparently started as a demonstration against a series of arrests made two weeks ago.
Trouble started when police tried to move cars which had been parked by the demonstrators and were - according to the police - blocking traffic.
A police spokesman said after the riot that exactly what happened was not clear - but "there is no possibility whatever" that police fired first.
