Background: India played for safety at Trent Bridge when they went in to reply to England's total of 422. They batted nearly four hours for their 116 for three before bad light and then rain stopped play for the day.

The openers took an hour and three quarters to put on 35 for the first wicket.

All this contrasted with the lively hours' play June 5 when England added sixty four runs for their last four wickets. Then, the Indian openers - Roy and Contractor - had been in for twenty minutes, when rain brought a halt ... and still there was no score.

Ten minutes later play resumed, and the Indian score rose slowly. Then the Lancashire bowler Greenhough got his first test wicket. It was that of Contractor ... It was well held by Barrington.

Contractor had scored, fifteen. Umbrigar at the wicket now had a narrow escape .... later, when Horton was bowling again, the patient Roy passed his fifty.
