    TUNISIANS VOTED IN LARGE NUMBERS TODAY (2 NOVEMBER) TO EXTEND PRESIDENT HABIB BOURGUIBA'S MANDATE FOR A THIRD FIVE-YEAR TERM AND ELECT A NEW 101-SEAT NATIONAL ASSEMBLY.

    MINISTRY OF THE INTERIOR OFFICIALS SAID LATE TONIGHT THAT VOTING RANGED BETWEEN 75 AND 95 PER CENT ACCORDING TO EARLY RETURNS.

    PRESIDENT BOURGUIBA WAS STANDING UNOPPOSED. ALL THE ASSEMBLY CANDIDATES PRESENTED BY TUNISIA'S SOLE POLITICAL PARTY, THE PARTI SOCIALISTE DESTOURIEN, WERE ASSURED OF BEING RETURNED IN THE ABSENCE OF ANY OPPOSITION.

    THE PRESIDENT, LOOKING FIT FOR A MAN WHO IS CONVALESCING, WAS DRIVEN IN AN OPEN CAR AMID CHEERING CROWDS TO CAST HIS OWN VOTE AT ONE OF TUNIS'S POLLING STATIONS. AT 67 HE IS CONVALESCING FROM A HEART ATTACK AND HEPATITIS.

    ALSO CHEERED AS HE ARRIVED TO CASH HIS VOTE WAS THE GENERAL SECRETARY OF THE P.S.D. AND SECRETARY OF STATE, M. BAHI LADGHAM.

    PRESIDENT BOURGUIBA IS EXPECTED TO ANNOUNCE A CABINET RESHUFFLE SOON AFTER THE FULL RESULT OF THE COMBINED ELECTIONS IS ANNOUNCED. ACCORDING TO OBSERVERS, HE IS LIKELY TO APPOINT M. LADGHAM TO A NEW POST AND TO DROP THE YOUNG LEADER AHMED BEN SALAH FROM THE GOVERNMENT.
