  • Description

A GROUP OF NEARLY ONE THOUSAND TANGWENA TRIBESMEN LIVING IN THE GAERESI VALLEY OF RHODESIA ARE FACING EVICTION FROM THEIR TRADITIONAL TRIBAL HOME BECAUSE IT IS SITUATED IN AN AREA CLASSIFIED AS 'EUROPEAN' UNDER RHODESIA'S LAND APPORTIONMENT ACT OF 1965.

THE OWNER OF THE FARM ON WHICH THE TRIBAL SETTLEMENT IS SITUATED HAS ORDERED THE TANGWENAS TO MOVE FROM HIS LAND OR EACH FACE FINES OF GBP100 STERLING OR IMPRISONMENT FOR TWELVE MONTHS.

UNDER THE LAND APPORTIONMENT ACT ONLY AFRICANS WHO ACTUALLY WORK ON EUROPEAN PROPERTIES AND THEIR FAMILIES ARE PERMITTED TO LIVE IN A EUROPEAN AREA.

THE TANGWENA PEOPLE CLAIM TO HAVE OCCUPIED THE SETTLEMENT FOR MORE THAN A CENTURY, BUT THE CLAIM OF THE FARMER, MR. W. HANMER, TO THE LAND IS RECOGNISED AS LEGAL.

ALTHOUGH THEIR WAY OF LIFE HAS LARGELY REMAINED UNCHANGED, THE TANGWENA PEOPLE IN THE SETTLEMENT HAVE ASSISTED IN THEIR OWN ADVANCEMENT.

THEY HELPED TO BUILD A SCHOOL IN THE CAMP, WHICH IS ATTENDED BY A NUMBER OF CHILDREN NOT BELONGING TO THE TRIBE.

A NEIGHBOURING EUROPEAN, MR. S. KEEBLE, HAS TAKEN AN ACTIVE INTEREST IN THE WELFARE OF THE PEOPLE, MR. KEEBLE HAS SUGGESTED THE RHODESIAN GOVERNMENT COULD ACQUIRE THE LAND FOR THE TANGWENAS, AND A EUROPEAN TRUST ORGANISATION COULD HELP THE TRIBESMEN TO FARM IT.

ACCORDING TO SOME REPORTS THIS SUGGESTION IS BEING STUDIED BY THE RHODESIAN GOVERNMENT.
