Background: Taiwan, Japan and the Philippines overcame weaker opponents on the opening day of the 5th Far East Little League Baseball Championships.
Defending world champions Taiwan, cheered by over 2,000 spectators at Manila's Rizal Park, opened their bid for their fifth straight Asian title with an impressive 8-1 win over the South Koreans.
In another game on Wednesday (24 July), Japan trounced the Hong Kong team 11-0 on nine hits and no errors. Host team, the Philippines, beat Guam 8-0 for their first victory in the five-day tournament played on a round-robin system.
Although Taiwan is favoured to recapture the crown, Japan's impressive win over Hong Kong served notice to the defending champions that they were out to challenge them for the title.
The winners of the tournament will have the right to represent the Far East in next month's world championships in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.
