  • Description

The second anniversary of the death of President Gamal Abdel Nasser was remembered in Cairo on Thursday (28 September).

President Anwar Sadat, Nasser's comrade in arms since the 1940's and now his successor as the head of the Egyptian Government, led a commemoration rally of the Arab Socialist Union in Cairo.

It was the highlight of nationwide ceremonies to commemorate the man who led the Arab Progressive Movement for nearly two decades before dying of a heart attack at the age of 52.

In an article in Cairo's leading newspaper "Al Ahram", Mohamed Heykal, an old companion of the ex-President and a leading commentator, outlined what the Arab world in general - and the Egyptians in particular - see as their debt to Nasser:
"He was the architect of his country's free society, socialism, Arab and African Unity, economic progress, Egyptian-Soviet friendship, non-aligned policy and other accomplishments which had "rocked imperialist fortresses."
The article also said that the late President was "the symbol of the Arab Nations' honesty with itself."
SYNOPSIS: Nationwide commemorations of the second anniversary of the death of President Gamal Abdel Nasser took place in Egypt on Thursday.

Thousands of mourners converged on Nasser's mausoleum, near his house in the Cairo suburb of Manshief El-Bakry, to pay their homage to their old leader and the man described as 'the symbol of the Arab Nation's honesty with itself'.

Nasser's successor, President Anwar Sadat - here seen approaching the tomb - was Nasser's comrade in arms for two eventful decades which saw the overthrow of the monarchy, the expulsion of the British, and the establishment of the modern Egyptian state.

Nasser's daughter, Hodda, and other members of the ex-President's family, also paid their own tributes.

At a commemoration rally earlier, President Sadat hailed the Libyan Revolution. He said that Colonel Gaddafi and his comrades had rejuvenated the Arab world.
